Marriage Doesn't Require Money, and Genesis Proves It

# What Marriage Was Before We Complicated It Every wedding you've ever been to borrowed its most famous line straight from Genesis 2. Before we let centuries of tradition and culture pile on top of it, I wanted to ask a simpler question: what was marriage actually designed to be? **Two Reasons, Not One** Scripture gives two separate purposes for marriage: filling and stewarding the earth together (Genesis 1:28), and simply not being alone (Genesis 2:18). Collapsing marriage into only one of these misses half of what it was built for. **What "Ezer" Really Means** The Hebrew word behind "helper" is ezer, the same word used for God himself in passages like Psalm 121. It describes a strong counterpart standing face-to-face, not someone positioned beneath. **Leaving, Bonding, Becoming One** Genesis 2:24 describes a deliberate, permanent attachment: leaving an old primary loyalty and forming a new one. I share a personal story about realizing "one plus one" wasn't adding up to more in a past relationship, and what that taught me about what real bonding is supposed to feel like. **Naked and Unashamed: Total Transparency** Before sin, Adam and Eve were fully seen with nothing hidden and nothing distorted. What broke after the fall wasn't the physical nakedness. It was that transparency, and marriages have been dealing with the fallout ever since. **Marriage Doesn't Require Money** I push back on the idea that a "real" wedding requires a big budget, sharing my own experience of getting engaged with no money for a big event. The covenant, not the ceremony, is what Genesis is actually describing. Whatever cultural weight we've stacked on top of marriage since then, the original design was simpler and sturdier than most of what we've built on top of it: answering loneliness, and building something together that neither person could be alone.
