Genesis 2-3: Dust, Ribs, and a Serpent's Twisted Question
Flag before publishing: this episode's opening ("we talked previously about what Eden was like, what was the purpose of Eden") sounds like it's referencing TBISS263's content, not preceding it. Worth double-checking whether 262 and 263 should swap numbers before you publish. I take this one slow, verse by verse, because Genesis 2 and 3 carry more weight than a quick read gives them credit for. We already talked about what Eden was for. Now we walk through what actually happens there: how the man is formed, how the woman is built, and how one conversation with a serpent unravels all of it. DUST AND BREATH Genesis 2:7 is deliberately physical. God forms man from dust and breathes life into him. It's not abstract. It's hands-on, the same way Jesus later touches people to heal them. A GARDEN WITH REAL GEOGRAPHY The rivers in Genesis 2:10–14 aren't fairy tale details. Two of the four, the Tigris and the Euphrates, are rivers we can still point to on a map. This is a text anchoring itself to a real place. NAMING AS AUTHORITY When God brings the animals to Adam to name, that's not a cute detail. Naming in the ancient world was an act of authority. Adam is exercising the rule he was given, and the process also reveals what's missing before the solution, the woman, shows up. THE SERPENT'S DISTORTION The serpent opens with a question that misrepresents what God actually said, and Eve's answer adds a restriction God never gave either. Sin shows up here two ways: not doing what God said, and adding things God never said in the first place. THREE OBSERVATIONS, THEN A CHOICE Eve sees the fruit is good for food, pleasing to look at, and desirable for wisdom, three ways of talking yourself into something before you act. And Adam was standing right there the whole time. This wasn't a decision made alone. CONSEQUENCES AND A RESCUE ALREADY STARTING The curses land on the serpent, the woman, and the man in that order, and then God makes clothing from animal skin, the first death in Scripture, to cover the very people who tried to hide from Him. Even in judgment, He's still caring for them. If there's one thing I want to leave you with, it's that Genesis 3 isn't really a story about willpower. It's a story about God covering people the moment they try to cover themselves, and the whole rest of Scripture is His rescue plan playing out from there.
